Application for Re-entry Permit in Japan

“Deemed Re-entry Permit” (Minashi Sainyukoku Kyoka) is a system that allows foreign nationals residing in Japan with a valid passport to re-enter Japan within one year from the date of departure without obtaining a regular re-entry permit. However, this does not apply to those who are staying in Japan with a period of stay of less than 3 months or with a short-term stay status.

“Re-entry permission” (Sainyukoku Kyoka) is granted by the Minister of Justice prior to departure in order to simplify the entry and landing procedures for foreign nationals who have temporarily left Japan and wish to re-enter Japan. There are two types of re-entry permits: one is valid for one time only, and the other is valid for multiple times within the period of validity. The maximum period of validity is 5 years (6 years for special permanent residents) within the current Resident Status in Japan. Foreign nationals who leave Japan with a deemed re-entry permit do not need to obtain a re-entry permit.
